I've been playing this on and off for the past year now. Models a great range of planes from pre WW2 up to the Korean War, pitting them in combat against each other.
Playable in arcade mode with keyboard and mouse all the way up to a full simulator mode where a HOTAS is required, it's a hell of a lot of fun.
Best of all, free to play.

If you have a console you should definitely check out Birds of Steel. It's like the Gran Turismo of WWII planes.

I've been playing War thunder for the last week, though not at home, so I'm re-starting it. It a lot of fun, a little grinding at times but as you progress things get increasingly interesting.

How's the economy/grinding? I gave it up about 7 months ago at around lvl 7-9 in most nations. Things gotten better or worse?

It's still a bit of grind, they've redone the tiers/plane upgrades from the original 10 tiers, now there's only 5.
You now also research upgrades to the engine/guns/frame for each plane which when each level of upgrades (4 in total) is complete, gives a boost of XP to the next plane you are researching.

That era was the shit as far as games go, plus we had the golden (and final... :( ) age of the american arcade scene.

This game is essentially IL-2: Wings of Prey (much of the content is straight-up lifted) but in a Free-2-Play format. Its ancestor is the old IL-2: Sturmovik 1946 , which is actually still a superior game in every way except visuals. Still, War Thunder is a pretty decent game and it generally gets better all the time.
As somebody who has been playing it since the closed beta period, I can say that the grind has actually gotten worse, though. Where before you could unlock a whole tier and just purchase the planes you want within that tier, you must now grind out research points for every individual plane. The earn rate on RP is terrible, so it takes a long time to get what you're after. Gaijin is apparently infamous for doing things like this, and it has kind of soured the relationship between the developers and the players.
You'll want a pretty powerful PC to run it; it doesn't support multi-GPU configurations and at 1440p with a Radeon HD 7970, I get frame lag with 4x MSAA on and everything else maxed out. Also, while using the mouse is actually easier and more effective than using a joystick, I recommend investing in the latter since it's so much more rewarding that way and because it is mandatory equipment (as in, the game requires it) for the full simulator modes.

Seriously? I'm running i7 930 with a 7970, I'm pushing over 100FPS at 1920x1200 at high settings.
It can be grindy, but I don't mind as the game play is actually fun. Tier 2-3 battles are where most of the fun is.

I am running it a 2560x1440 in DX11 mode with everything else pushed as high as it will go except AA. Before the most recent patch, I had no issue running it at 4x MSAA, but now I have to drop it to 2x MSAA to get near what I used to. I said "screw it" and dropped all MSAA and am just running the shader-based FXAA now.
They've also messed up on some of the visuals; cockpits that used to offer a lens flare at the appropriate angles (M.C. 202, Bf. 109 F) no longer do so.
For the record, my specs are as follows:
Core i7 3820 LGA 2011
16 GB DDR3 1600 MHz in 4x 4GB DIMMs
2x HIS Radeon HD 7970 (not GHz Ed) in Crossfire
500 GB 10,000 RPM WD VelociRaptor
128 GB Crucial M4 SSD (out of commission for the moment)
I also got lucky with the grind in that I had most of the planes I wanted before the new RP system. Unfortunately, I still need to get my Fw. 190 series going.

So I started playing this and the grind is a bit annoying. Seems like a long time until I get any cool planes. I also don't understand how they make money. Do people actually pay to get the in game coins?
